Three steps, in this order. Skipping the second one is why most charts stop after a week.
Pick 3 to 5 tasks
Choose things your child can already do most days: teeth, shoes on, toys in the bin. The chart builds a habit, it does not teach a new skill.
Agree on the reward first
Write the reward on the chart before the first star. Small and soon beats big and far away: a park trip on Saturday, not a bike in June.
Stick the star right away
The star goes on within a minute of the task, by the child, every time. That is the whole trick, and it is why the chart lives on the fridge, not in a drawer.

Charts by age
A chart for a 3 year old and a chart for a 9 year old are different tools. Start here if you are not sure which to print.
Ages 3 to 4
Picture tasks, same day rewards, 3 boxes a day at most. Potty and bedtime charts live here.

Weekly star charts, first chore charts, reading logs. Rewards at the end of the week start to work.
Ages 8 to 10

Questions parents ask us
Do reward charts work?
They work for building a specific daily habit over 2 to 6 weeks when the reward is agreed in advance and the star is given right away. They work badly as a general behavior scoreboard. Our age guides explain how to set one up so it does not fizzle out.
What size should I print?
Every free chart comes as letter and A4 PDF. Print at 100 percent, not "fit to page", so the boxes stay the right size for a half inch star sticker.
Can I edit the tasks?
The free PDFs have blank task lines so you can write your own. Premium sets include a fillable PDF you can type into before printing.
